my name is matt fleischman, and i am a surveyor currently working in pennsylvania.
i have been corresponding on several surveyor's forums on the web to get some feedback on the subject of file management, and point management both in the field and in the office.

some examples would be:
field astaked numbers
office calc numbers
field control numbers
field topo points

field notes..........etc.

i was wondering if maybe i could get some feedback on how other surveyors are managing their data, so at least i could get a template to work with.

thanks

Matt
We will usually precalc record data in 10 to 100 range (1 thru 10 are left in the file for temporary calc points).

When we locate these precalc points in the field we add 100 to the precalc no. for the found positions for a 200 thru 299 range.

When the map is calced we may adjust some of those field locations to match r/w and holding one way for a property line, etc. so we add 100 to the found positions, for a 300 to 399 range, for map positions.

When staking we start clean, 1000 series for rough grade, 2000 for storm drain and other underground, 3,000 for buildings, etc.

By the time we finish a project many people touching the points file do not remember the plan or are in a hurry and the file ends up with huge gaps of points not used, so the memory uses a place holder and our data collect is sometimes overburdened with a lot of nothing.
Good luck, If get a comprehensive collection of tips we would certainly like to be on your copy list.
